AT PAKENHAM WATER MILL

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 27TH

For over a thousand years Pakenham Water Mill has been at the centre of food provision for the village and the local area. Probably from the time of the Romans who had a substantial settlement nearby, to the Dark Ages, Medieval and Tudor times, the Georgians and the Victorians and now in the 21st Century the mill has been there to provide essential flour supplies for all, rich and poor.

Today The Historic Suffolk Charitable Trust enables that tradition to continue. Entirely operated by volunteers the Mill continues to produce high grade wheat, spelt and rye as the last working water mill in Suffolk.

To reinforce that centuries old link between the Mill and flour production, a breadmaking event was held at the Mill on Thursday November 27th. All breadmakers, young and old, experienced or not, brought their loaves to the Mill to be evaluated by Simon Wooster, the founder of Wooster’s Bakery.

Entries were free. There were five classes: a traditionally baked loaf, a machine-made loaf, a novelty loaf, soda bread and four mince pies.

Before looking at the entries Simon talked about the craft of breadmaking and said something about his bakery business.

Whilst Simon was looking at the entries, light refreshments were available in our newly refurbished Robin’s Barn.
